Green Wing Series 2 DVD Details

Green Wing Series 2 DVD The second series of Green Wing is available on Region 2 DVD. We managed to get hold of a copy the boxset hot off the 4DVD press as it was being manufactured back in 2006 - we went through it to discover what exactly they'd put on the discs. Below is the run down we published in our newsletter at the time.

The good news is that there is fair chunk of extra features on this DVD as you'll be able to see! In fact, there's over well over an hour of never before broadcast scenes, a behind-the-scenes documentary, an out-takes reel and four episode commentaries.

Note: If you are looking to find out about other GW DVDs, the script books you need to look at our main merchandise page instead.

General Details

Like the series one DVDs, this series two set comes in a well-packaged and attractive translucent slipcase (see image above for cover design).

There's three discs in all (the Amazon listing is currently saying there are just two discs inside - that's wrong). The set contains all eight episodes from the second series and a number of extras, as mentioned above. The final special episode of Green Wing isn't included (this is now availabe on a seperate disc).

Subtitles are available on all eight episodes, English only on the version we have here though. The selection menus are a very similar design to the first series DVD - i.e. GW-style blurred scenes zipping past in the background with the options "Episodes", "Extras" and "Subtitles" selectable near the bottom via a green line that extends down the screen.

All that's boring though, what you're probably really interested in is exactly what extras are on each disk. Well, we aim to please...

Disc 1

Basic Summary: Episodes 1 - 3, Deleted Scenes, Cast List

As expected, the first disc contains the first three episodes of the second series - we can't stop watching that hilarious opening dream sequence now!

In terms of extras there's a fairly pointless cast list: 18 pages of people's names. Not very exciting or entertaining. Much more fun is the deleted scenes. This first disc contains near on 30 minutes of extra material they couldn't fit into the first three episodes. The additional scenes are fast paced (i.e. no drawn out boring ones) and well edited together using the great GW time manipulation editing style. It actually surprised us how brilliant some of the cut stuff was - there's a couple of particularly funny scenes that really should have been included in the broadcast episodes we feel.

There's too many scenes to mention here, but here's a run-down of some our favourites...

  • More car park antics which would have been at the start of the first episode (Joanna runs over Alan's push bike)
  • A very funny scene in which Alan enters the hospital florist looking for some horrid flowers to give to Joanna (because they've split up). He asks the assistant for a bouquet that would adequately express his feelings by giving her lots of suggestions (e.g. he asks if she has one that says "henceforth my toilet tool will never darken your back door"). When she hands him some flowers suitable for a funeral Alan proceeds to get naked and eat the flowers. Typical Alan really!
  • In another hilarious scene Alan returns the gifts that Joanna gave him during their relationship (total list of items: travel biscuits). When Joanna won't give him back 'his trinkets' he ends up getting sellotaped to a chair.
  • One for the Julian Rhind-Tutt fans: a longer version of Mac's Take That dream
  • More scenes in Sue White's office (in one, she makes a baby out of cake, mental!)
  • In another very funny scene that it's a shame they cut, you can see why they did though... Boyce scams poor naive Martin by setting up an Al Qaeda Sweepstake ("where will they bomb next"). Martin gets The Isle of Man.
  • and in another of our favourite scenes Martin visits a sperm clinic. We won't describe what happens here - it'd probably get our website blocked by some security filters!

Disc 2

Basic Summary: Episodes 4 - 6, Deleted Scenes, Episode Commentaries

Disc 2 contains another three episodes in full. Two of which have audio commentaries available via the extras menu. In all there are three commentaries on this disc...

  • Episode 4, Option 1: Stephen Mangan, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Victoria Pile
  • Episode 4, Option 2: Tamsin Greig, Lucinda Raikes
  • Episode 6: Stephen Mangan, Julian Rhind-Tutt

We haven't had time to listen to the commentary in full yet however Stephen and Julian's ones sound the most fun what with their pretend dislike of each other and Mangan's put-on arrogance.

There's also another whole batch of deleted scenes on this disc. Some of them are a little longer than on the first disc, although a couple fell flat on us. There were still some that made us laugh out loud. In all another 1/2 hours of cut material here including...

  • Probably our favourite deleted scene... Guy is flat hunting and has found a house the owner will only let to a married couple so he cons (well, forces) Caroline into pretending to be his wife at the viewing. Before long things get out of control as they try to cover the fact they're lying (Caroline, for example tells the estate agent she met her "husband" Guy a year ago, but Guy's told him they have four children already) - buy the DVD see how deep a hole they manage to dig themselves into!
  • A lot of extra material from the operating theater set (including a game of murder in the dark) and scenes from Sue White's office which confirm she must be insane (we see she keeps jelly and a tortoise in her draw).
  • Joanna trying on new glasses, you'll definitely feel sorry for the very patient sales assistant.
  • Guy stoops to a new low but attempting to chat up a nurse who's father has just died
  • and Mac frustrates Mr "Vote Alan Roderick Statham" whilst Boyce manages to get into a couple of spats with Alan later on too.

Disc 3

Basic Summary: Episodes 7 and 8, Episode Commentary, Deleted Scenes, Behind-the-Scenes Feature, Outtakes

Disc three is very packed. It contains the final two episodes as well as a raft of different extras.

First up is a chance to listen to episode eight with a commentary soundtrack voiced this time by Pippa Haywood who is 'assisted' by Stephen Mangan and Julian Rhind-Tutt.

Behind-the-Scenes Feature

The disc also contains a 17 minute behind-the-scenes feature which gives a brief glimpse into what goes on behind the camera. We were a bit frustrated that it didn't go as in-depth as it could have, it glosses over the top of a lot of stuff, however there's still plenty of interest for the hardcore fan. The footage is interspersed with insights from Stephen Mangan, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Pippa Haywood, Oliver Chris, writer James Henry and production designer Jonathan Paul Green. The various sections of the feature are:

  • Auditions - what the interviewed actors thought of their auditions (Oliver Chris admitted he thought it was Steve Coogan he was auditioning with, he didn't realise till afterwards it was Stephen Mangan, very embarrassing!)
  • Rehearsals - an all-too-brief look at the writing process.
  • Dream Sequence - how they filmed the dream sequence.
  • Filming At A Hospital - in this section the actors explain how hard it was to act in a real hospital. Apparently they got lots of funny looks and everyone kept asking for directions because they thought they were real doctors. Also, more seriously, they apparently sometimes found it difficult to be funny when, for example, doctors rushed past with a real A&E emergency.
  • The Ham - some outtakes of the cast in the lift trying not to laugh at Michelle Gomez in the ham costume.
  • Statham On Fire - a behind-the-scenes look at the stunt where Alan's arm is on fire. It looks like they almost really burnt Mark Heap, he didn't look too happy!
  • Umbilical Sushi - a rather unpleasant insight into how they made Sue's umbilical sushi that Guy ate in the canteen. Stephen Mangan admitted he didn't realise how horrid the prop was, hence took too big a bite and was sick.
  • The Beach Scene - see how badly it was raining the day they filmed that.
  • Lion Cub - an interesting insight from Jonathan Paul Green into the difficulty of finding a lion cub to be that 'baby'. (Jonathan phoned up every zoo in the country!). They ended up having to re-build Sue White's office set in a zoo so they could film the scene. A lot of work for 30 seconds of celluloid!
  • Weirdest Thing - the interviewed cast share what they thought was the weirdest thing they had to do in the two series and there's also some video of everyone mucking about between scenes.

Deleted Scenes & Outtakes

More deleted scenes on this final disc, about 15 minutes in all. The best four were...

  • Sue White talks to Martin's "doodle" in the men's loos and then... well goes to the loo in the urinals herself!
  • Alan urinates in Sue's office (bit of a theme emerging here)
  • Martin's elaborate proposal plan (which involves a banana) doesn't quite go to plan, in fact it ends anything but romantically
  • ... and it all ends with a rather nice jazz number in the operating theater

Although it doesn't advertise it on the extras menu (well not on the draft version we have here at least) if you keep watching the deleted scenes are followed by 8 minutes of outtakes, the best of which involve the cast deliberately attempting to make each other laugh.
